new pursuits

January 2, 2014

It takes courage to keep evolving. I was thinking about this tonight in regards to my creative path, but it can really apply to any area of life.

I think as an artist, or as anyone else who has gained some level of proficiency with a skill set, learning new things feels like starting over again to some degree. Establishing yourself on a new path, when an old path that took much time and effort to establish already exists, can feel daunting. Even if there is a level of confidence that a new path will again be forged in due time, it can still feel a bit scary. It's like starting as a newborn again.

Sometimes it is easy to think, "Well, maybe I should just stay on the old path. I know it well and I can keep improving there. It's familiar and known." But, it may also be luring you with its sense of safety. And safety isn't always a good thing, especially if it causes you to miss out on growth or a new pursuit that is calling. What I've found to be true is that as you risk and take steps of faith towards a new, albeit still undefined thing, the universe steps in to support you. In this way, you are not alone.
