The other week we ventured over to the Watts Towers in, of course, Watts, an impoverished neighborhood of LA. We took a tour of the towers which were built in the early 1900's by Italian immigrant, Simon Rodia. He spent 33 years building these towers - a very intricate creation of structural steel and mortar, adorned with a mosaic of glass, sea shells, pottery, and tile. The way he built the structure was especially fascinating...all without machines, scaffolding, bolts, rivets, or welding. It's definitely worth a visit. Rodia's life and view of his creation was pretty fascinating.
