photography project

September 5, 2011

I've been thinking lately about new ways to engage with ventures to try that will infuse some fresh life into my creative process. I think it would benefit me to have some projects that aren't directly tied to the daily making, selling, and marketing of art. A place to just "express" for expression's sake. This has always been my mantra with art, but it can get muddled at times when you have a prolonged external focus. So, I've decided to cover an entire wall with photos. This isn't too shocking, as my art blog has also become a pseudo-photo blog over the past year or so. I am thinking about purchasing an inexpensive Polaroid camera for this wall project. Obviously there are pros and cons to instant film, but there are a few things that draw me to it. First, there is no editing. You cannot crop, change the color, size, or manipulate the image in any way, shape, or form. Knowing this will make me consider my shots much more carefully (well, that and the expense...I think the film comes out to about $1 per photo? Yikes). There will be no taking thirty photos and liking just five of them. Also, I like the immediacy of it, the simplicity, and the slightly "aged" look. I'm still contemplating just doing digital photos and printing them, but I think the Polaroid angle is a bit more interesting. So, we'll see. I will be sure to document the wall as it takes shape and share images with you here...

  1. I love this idea. Photography has organically taken root in your artistic expression and I think polaroid is a perfect medium for you to work in. Can't wait to see what you create!

  2. Cool idea! Hard to believe that once upon a time (like when we were in college) we had to think hard about each photo we took. Looking forward to seeing what this looks like!

  3. This sounds like a fun new direction for your creative endeavors, exploring your photography sensibility with a different tool! Excellent!
