floor

April 8, 2010

I live in a very small dwelling which does not provide much work space. Fortunately, my husband has acquiesced and granted the floor of one of our spare rooms to me and my creativity. This works well, because I have always been a floor worker. Even as a child, I detested sitting at a desk after school to do my homework. I much preferred to be sprawled on the floor, a bed, or any other open space. I continued this pattern through college, never using libraries to study. I'm not sure why that is, but something about a hard wood desk and chair always felt confining to me.

I also think that when it comes to creating, I need to "see" everything in order to feel the most creative inspiration. If I don't see it, it pretty much doesn't exist. Hence, my need for a big space to spread everything out. This can lead to a very messy work environment. Here is a photo of how the floor typically looks in our "office":

Maybe the organized wood stack against the wall balances out what's happening on the floor:

And here is a forlorn-looking desk, all cleaned off and waiting to be used:

One comment on “floor”

  1. I love seeing your workspace! It cool to get a behind the scenes view of your creative space. The empty desk vs. the floor vs. the piles of wood is awesome.
